Oakland residents from all neighborhoods displayed an extraordinary volunteer spirit on 2008 Coastal Cleanup Day. In addition to the nearly 1,000 volunteers participating in Creek to Bay Day , hundreds more gathered along the shoreline at cleanup sites managed by the East Bay Regional Park District . All toll, 1,364 volunteers came out to improve Oakland ’s waterways and their environs. Volunteers collected 5,873 pounds of trash from Oakland 's creeks, shorelines and Lake Merritt ; picked up 90 pounds of recyclables; removed 321 cubic yards of green waste to make way for native plants to flourish; and labeled 150 storm drains with durable stainless steel markers bearing the message "No Dumping, Drains to Bay” or “No Dumping, Drains to Lake ”.

In 2007, 1,061 volunteers participated in a range of projects at 20 locations around the City. As a result, 1,564 pounds of trash and 47 cubic yards of large debris were removed from Oakland's creeks and Lake Merritt. In addition, 263 cubic yards of non-native green waste , including species such as Algerian and Cape ivy, Scotch Broom, and Vinca (a.k.a. Periwinkle), were removed from our riparian (creek) corridors to make way for native plants to flourish. To help reduce the future amount of trash in our creeks, 80 storm drains were labeled with new stainless steel storm drain markers bearing the message "No Dumping, Drains to Bay.” The new markers are an attractive and durable way to remind residents that storm drains lead directly to Oakland’s creeks, Lake Merritt and the San Francisco Bay and pollutants such as litter, car wash runoff, and motor oil should be kept out of the drain.

As a result of everyone's efforts, 5 tons of trash were removed from Oakland 's creeks and Lake Merritt , and  207 cubic yards of non-native green waste was removed from our riparian (creek) corridors to make way for native plants to flourish. To help reduce the future amount of trash in our creeks,  250 storm drains were stenciled with the message "No Dumping, Drains to Bay (or Creek)" to remind people that our storm drains should carry only stormwater to our creeks and the San Francisco Bay.
